SpaceX has agreed to testify before the New York City Council this week as part of a legislative investigation into artificial intelligence safety risks. The council announced the agreement on Tuesday, with the hearing scheduled for Friday at 10 a.m. ET in front of its tech committee.

The agreement follows a subpoena issued on Sept. 28 by Council Speaker Julie Menin and General Counsel Nwamaka Ejebe to Elon Musk and SpaceX's AI unit. That subpoena had compelled testimony for a hearing that took place last week, though the council has not explained why SpaceX did not appear then.

The council's investigation focuses on potential AI safety risks, and Friday's hearing will give the tech committee a chance to question SpaceX representatives directly. The council's press release did not specify who would testify on behalf of SpaceX.
