Apple's latest iPhone 18 Pro models include advanced camera hardware, but magnetic accessories can undermine it. According to Engadget, Apple's support documentation notes that strong magnets in common accessories—such as removable grips, car mounts, power banks, and ring lights—can interfere with the rear camera's stabilization systems.
The problem stems from two magnet-sensitive technologies: optical image stabilization (OIS) and closed-loop autofocus. Both rely on lens-position sensors that detect movement and adjust the lens to keep images sharp. Strong magnetic fields can make these sensors less accurate or disable them entirely, resulting in blurred photos or restricted lens movement.
For accessory makers, this is a design consideration: products that place strong magnets near the camera could hurt the user experience. Apple specifically warns about third-party accessories like latch folio covers and car mounts. The practical fix is to avoid placing strong magnets close to the camera, though that does not guarantee flawless performance if other underlying issues exist.
