A free mod that brings Titanfall 2 into virtual reality is getting attention not just for its quality, but for what it says about the VR games business. The mod was created by Jordan "CircuitLord" Juarez, a developer who previously worked on Gorilla Tag and other VR titles. He says the industry is stuck in a loop: studios won't fund large VR games because the playerbase is small, and the playerbase stays small because there are no large VR games. He believes mods like his can "jumpstart" the market and show studios what VR can be.

Juarez's background gives the critique weight. He left a job at VR studio Another Axiom after its Echo spiritual successor didn't match his hopes, and he started his own solo studio, Iteration Three. The Titanfall 2 mod is a side project, built in roughly a month using the community's Northstar mod loader. He says AI helped speed up the reverse-engineering work, though the game design decisions were his own.

The mod is free, which means it isn't a direct revenue play. But it demonstrates a possible business path: adapting existing AAA games for VR at a fraction of the cost of building new ones. Juarez credits Titanfall 2's original developers for the experience, and he is already getting requests to add multiplayer modes. Whether that model scales beyond passionate solo developers remains an open question for the VR industry.
