Apple Music users sometimes find that songs in their library are grayed out and won't play. According to a recent Engadget guide, the most common explanations are that the device is offline, the track is subject to territorial licensing restrictions, or the artist or label has removed it from the catalog. In licensing cases, the article notes, neither the user nor Apple can restore access.

To diagnose the issue, the guide suggests viewing the Cloud Status column in the Songs list. A "No Longer Available" label indicates the track was likely pulled by the rights holder, while an exclamation mark points to a local sync issue and "Waiting" means the sync is incomplete. For non-licensing problems, recommended fixes include restarting the device, deleting and redownloading the track, and turning Sync Library off and on again.

Account-related settings can also cause tracks to disappear. Apple Music's Content Restrictions may block explicit-tagged songs, and users may lose access to purchases made under a different Apple Account. As a last resort, the article advises signing out of the Apple Account on the device and signing back in to reset the connection.
