The Xbox Series X, launched in 2020, still has years of life left, according to Engadget. But rising component prices driven by the AI boom may push consumers to hold onto the console longer than originally planned. Microsoft has said its next console, code-named Project Helix, will focus on affordability, though Engadget notes that is hard to reconcile with current component costs. Higher next-gen prices would only improve the Series X's staying power in the market.

Software support is another factor. Microsoft's treatment of the 13-year-old Xbox One, which still receives updates in 2026, suggests the Series X will be supported for years after its successor arrives. Most games continued to launch on the Xbox One for years after the Series X appeared. Still, publishers typically skip older hardware after a couple of years, so big new releases for the Series X may only continue for a few more years.

On the hardware side, the Series X is fairly repairable. The disc drive, power supply unit, and HDMI ports are common failure points. Replacing the power supply, internal storage, or antenna boards requires only basic tools, while the disc drive needs rudimentary soldering and HDMI ports demand advanced microsoldering. Some replacement parts are sold directly by Microsoft, and out-of-warranty servicing is available at a steep cost. Keeping vents clean and placing the console in a well-ventilated area can also prevent overheating issues.
