BYD is preparing a second generation of its Seagull, its cheapest electric car, and the changes are substantial. The new model, reportedly named “Great Seagull,” will go on sale in China by the end of 2026, according to Zhang Zhuo, general manager of BYD’s Ocean series. Regulatory filings show it is 4,205 mm long, 425 mm longer than the current car, with a wheelbase stretched by 150 mm to 2,650 mm.
The powertrain also changes. The front-mounted 55 kW motor is replaced by a rear-mounted 95 kW unit, which opens up space for a front trunk. Local reports suggest higher-priced versions could use BYD’s Blade LFP Batteries 2.0 and 5-minute Flash Charging, and spy images show roof-mounted LiDAR, hinting at the God’s Eye B driver assistance system. BYD has not confirmed these features.
Inside, the redesign brings a larger infotainment screen, a two-spoke steering wheel, and a redesigned center console, though no instrument cluster is visible in previews. The current Seagull starts at about $10,000 in China and was the world’s sixth-best-selling EV in the first half of 2026, with over 152,000 units sold. Overseas versions, sold as Dolphin Surf or Mini, could start around €30,000 in Europe, up from €22,900 today, if the larger model follows the current pricing pattern.
