China EV Sales Hit Record 65% Share in August, But ICE Decline Drove It
August's record 65% EV share in China was driven more by falling internal-combustion sales than by surging EV demand, according to CleanTechnica's analysis.
China's auto market hit a new milestone in August, with electric vehicles taking 65% of total sales, according to CleanTechnica's monthly report. Battery-electric vehicles alone made up 45% of the market. The report credits high gas prices and a steady wave of new BEV models for supporting demand.
But the record is different from previous ones. CleanTechnica notes that this time the achievement was driven largely by a significant contraction in internal-combustion engine sales, rather than an extraordinary surge in EV purchases. That distinction matters for interpreting the pace of China's energy transition.
The report also highlights Leapmotor as a rising force in the market, though it does not provide specific sales figures. The broader picture is one of continued electrification, but August's data shows how quickly conventional car sales can shrink once EV share approaches two-thirds of the market.
