DeLorean, the stainless-steel sports car brand, is moving into electric aviation. It will field a DeLorean-branded eVTOL in the Airspeeder racing series, starting with the spec Mk3C chassis. For the 2027-28 season, the company plans to work with student engineering teams from UC Berkeley and Georgia Tech to design an all-new racer.

The timing is notable: the announcement came on the same day Tesla was expected to finally demonstrate the hovering capability of its long-delayed Roadster 2.0. DeLorean's design has long influenced Tesla, from falcon-wing doors to stainless steel finishes, and the Back to the Future connection makes the flying-car race entry a symbolic move.

Airspeeder CEO Matt Pearson called DeLorean "the original flying car brand," adding that every great racing series is defined by its constructors. However, the article notes it's unclear whether the DeLorean team will be more than a PR stunt. The brand has been revived in recent years, but actual flight remains to be seen.
