A Belgian rider has set a new Guinness World Record for the longest journey on an electric motorcycle on a single charge. Jelle Verstaen rode a production Zero DS equipped with the optional Power Tank, carrying 19.2 kWh of battery capacity, for 436.5 km (271.2 miles) before the bike ran out of power. That surpasses the previous record of 310.7 km by more than 125 km, and two other Zero riders on the same attempt also beat the old mark.
The record run started high in the French Alps and wound down toward the Mediterranean coast. Verstaen deliberately kept his average speed around 52 km/h (32 mph), since aerodynamic drag rises sharply with speed. The team also chose nighttime riding to reduce traffic and help maintain a steady pace. Heavy rain over the final 100 km made the endurance run more difficult, but the bike continued to the finish.
The source notes important caveats: the route had a significant net drop in elevation, and the low cruising speed is far below typical highway riding. So the result does not mean a stock electric motorcycle will routinely travel 271 miles at 70 mph. Still, the ride demonstrates how efficiently a two-wheeled EV can move a person when conditions are carefully optimized, and it shows that production electric motorcycles are capable of far more range than many assume.
