According to a new analysis, electric trucks are already cheaper to operate than diesel in a significant share of the European market. The study compares total cost of ownership across nine major EU markets and finds electric trucks come out ahead in six of them. Combined, those six markets represent 46% of all trucks sold in the EU.
The cost advantage is not universal—in the remaining three markets, diesel still holds the edge. But with EU hauliers facing another diesel price shock, the analysis argues that electrification is the only realistic option to protect operators against future oil crises. The findings suggest that for nearly half the trucks sold in Europe, the economic case for going electric is already stronger than sticking with diesel.
