The latest EV market data paints a split picture. In the US, the average transaction price for a new EV declined in August, even as the average price for all new cars climbed back above $50,000. Meanwhile, global sales were barely changed, but that headline number masked a sharp regional divergence.
In Europe, EV sales surged 36% year over year in August. North America, by contrast, saw sales plunge 33%. The two trends offset each other, leaving global EV sales nearly flat.
Taken together, the reports suggest that affordability improvements in the US have not yet translated into stronger demand, while European buyers are adopting EVs at a much faster clip. The sources are from the same publication but cover different metrics—pricing in one, sales volumes in the other—so they don't directly conflict, but they do highlight a fragmented global market.
