Ford has begun accepting preorder invites for its upcoming Fathom electric pickup, which will start at $28,350 before a $1,595 destination fee, keeping the base price below $30,000. According to Electrek, that is roughly half the starting price of the F-150 Lightning. Official preorders open in early 2027, with production planned at Ford's Louisville Assembly Plant later that year.
The Fathom is the first vehicle built on Ford's Universal Electric Vehicle platform. Ford says it will have more passenger room than a Toyota RAV4, excluding the frunk and bed, and will cost less to own over five years than a three-year-old used Tesla Model Y. The company has not yet released range or towing figures.
The truck uses a lithium iron phosphate battery pack that serves as the vehicle's floor, which Ford says lowers the center of gravity and frees up interior space. It will include bidirectional charging, BlueCruise hands-free highway driving, and a large touchscreen with Apple Maps integrated. Ford targets a 0-60 mph time comparable to a Mustang EcoBoost.
Ford describes the Fathom as a midsize four-door pickup, though prototypes spotted testing appear closer in size to the compact Maverick. CEO Jim Farley has cautioned that launching at scale, cost, and on time will be difficult, but a Ford spokesperson said the 2027 launch date is unchanged.
