General Motors and Pacific Gas and Electric have launched a joint program for new EV buyers in California. Under the deal, customers who purchase a GM electric vehicle receive a free home charger. The program is designed to make EV ownership more convenient while also encouraging charging habits that benefit the electricity grid.

Participants can earn payments for charging their vehicle during periods when demand on the grid is lower. This time-shifting helps PG&E manage load more efficiently and reduces the risk of overloading the system during peak hours. The arrangement essentially turns charging into a grid-support activity, compensating customers for their flexibility.

The program highlights a growing trend of utilities and automakers collaborating on managed charging. While it is limited to GM vehicles and PG&E customers, it offers a concrete example of how EV adoption can be integrated with grid reliability goals.
