Maryland regulators have selected two transmission-connected battery projects in the first round of the state's bulk energy storage procurement. Flatiron Energy's Chalk Point Storage Project will provide 400 MW/1,600 MWh at a site in Prince George's County, while REV Renewables' Jade Meadow III will add 40 MW/160 MWh on reclaimed coal mine land in Garrett County. Both projects received 15-year flat pricing, with a combined cost of 6.98 cents per month for the average residential customer.
The 440 MW total falls short of the 800-MW target for this round. The commission declined to award the larger 500-MW Oystercatcher project and a requested expansion of Chalk Point, citing the need for local stakeholder engagement and the timing of the revised filing. The awards come as PJM Interconnection faces a 6.8 GW capacity shortfall for the 2028-2029 delivery year, with capacity prices at the $325/MW-day cap.
Under the Next Generation Energy Act, Maryland must hold at least two solicitations totaling 1.6 GW. The second round must open by Jan. 1, 2027, with awards due by Oct. 1, 2027. Commission Chair Kumar Barve said the next round is expected to draw from more than 40 additional storage projects in PJM's interconnection queue. MAREC Action's Evan Vaughan said the selected projects can help meet growing demand while reducing exposure to volatile capacity prices.
