Chery's Omoda and Jaecoo brands have launched a Canadian teaser site saying their "premium electric SUVs" will arrive in late 2026. The site lists no specific models, prices, or dealers, and notes that vehicles shown are for other markets. The company says it is building a dealer network and will announce locations closer to launch.
The timing follows Canada's January decision to cut its 100% tariff on Chinese-made electrified vehicles to 6.1% for up to 49,000 vehicles per year, rising to 70,000 by 2030. The quota covers plug-in hybrids and hybrids, not just battery-electric vehicles, which matters because much of Omoda and Jaecoo's global lineup is PHEV.
Chery has been preparing for Canada for a while: it filed Canadian trademarks in May, and Jaecoo E5 prototypes were spotted in Ontario. The most likely lead model is the Jaecoo E5, a compact electric SUV with 399 km WLTP range and a UK starting price of £27,505, though its 80 kW DC charging is slow by 2026 standards. Other candidates include the Omoda E5, Omoda 4, and several plug-in hybrids like the Jaecoo 7 and Omoda 9.
Omoda and Jaecoo will not be alone. BYD plans to open 20 Canadian dealerships in its first year, also targeting late 2026, and Tesla is already using the quota to sell a Shanghai-built Model 3 at a record-low price. The source notes that on paper, the lineup is less impressive than some other Chinese EVs, but the brand says it has exported over 1.2 million vehicles in about three years.
