PJM Interconnection has agreed to study a massive proposed AI data center and power project in Ohio under a state agreement approach, according to Utility Dive. The project, called Flagship, would include about 10 GW of data center load and 10.2 GW of gas-fired generation.
The plan also calls for AEP Ohio to build 765-kV transmission lines. PJM's review will examine how the project fits into the regional grid, using a process designed for state-backed resources.
The scale of the project highlights the growing tension between rapid AI-driven electricity demand and grid infrastructure planning. The study will be a key step in determining whether and how the project proceeds.
