Porsche has put inductive wireless charging into production for the first time, offering it as an option on the Cayenne Electric SUV. The system consists of a ground pad installed in the parking space and a charging pad on the underside of the car; charging starts automatically once the car is parked over the pad.

Porsche rates the system at up to 11 kW with roughly 90 percent efficiency, positioning it as an overnight charging solution. The ground pad is described as weatherproof for outdoor installation. Built-in safety features include motion sensors and foreign-object detection: charging stops automatically if a living creature comes close to the vehicle or pad, or if a metallic object on the pad heats up.

The option is now available to order in Germany and other European markets, with a staged global rollout planned. The news was initially buried in a press release about new colors and convenience features for the Cayenne Electric, and Porsche later released an explainer video detailing the system's engineering and testing.
