Porsche has ended speculation about its entry-level sports car. In an investor presentation covering strategy through 2035, the company confirmed that the 718 family—the Boxster convertible and Cayman hardtop—will be exclusively battery-powered, with 2028 as the first full production year. The gas versions had already ceased production in 2025, so the announcement formalizes a transition that enthusiasts had been debating.

One notable engineering choice is the battery placement. Instead of mounting the pack under the floor, Porsche puts it behind the seats, which keeps the driver low and gives the EV a rear weight bias of 55.2%, compared with 59.8% for the outgoing gas model. Electrek notes that this layout is similar to the original Tesla Roadster, and says it should provide strong traction under acceleration.

On the 911, however, Porsche's position remains defiant. CEO Michael Leiters said the 911 will "never" be electric. Electrek disagrees, arguing that tightening sales bans and the long-term decline of oil will force Porsche to electrify its flagship eventually. The outlet also points to Porsche's recent $6 billion loss and its decision to offer a gas and plug-in hybrid SUV as signs of continued strategic wobbling.
