Renault has unveiled a new electric concept car that revives the nameplate of the 1964 Renault 8 Gordini. The original was known for a rear-mounted 95 hp four-cylinder engine and a notoriously lively chassis. The new version keeps the retro silhouette but swaps in a 270 hp electric powertrain, along with modern suspension, wheels, and aerodynamic wings.
The design process involved more than 300 sketches, from which two proposals were developed and eventually combined into what Renault calls a new blueprint. The concept also features a bespoke three-layer blue paint, inspired by Bleu de France, that is meant to reveal the original historic shade along the body's edges under light. Inside, rally-ready details reinforce the car's sporting intent.
Renault's design team emphasized the visual stance: larger rear wheels (20 inches) compared to the front (19 inches) create a sense of momentum and nod to the original's rear-engined layout. The concept is presented as a styling study, and no production plans are stated in the source.
