The largest U.S. utilities are doing worse on shifting from fossil fuels to clean power than they were at the start of this decade, according to a new assessment. The overall verdict is a failing grade for the sector's clean energy transition.

The assessment also finds that more than four in ten utilities have backtracked on their climate goals since the start of the second Trump administration. That reversal marks a notable shift from the progress that had been expected earlier in the decade.

The findings point to a stalled transition in the power sector, with many of the country's biggest electricity providers moving away from their earlier commitments. The overall direction, according to the assessment, is negative.
