Volkswagen confirmed at the Paris Auto Show that a next-generation ID. Buzz is in development. Brand CEO Thomas Schäfer said the current model's cost base is wrong, and the new version will be more affordable. It will be built on the group's Scalable Systems Platform, which VW says will reduce costs and support software-defined vehicles.

Design boss Andreas Mindt said the van will get "lots of secret sauce" and stay visually interesting, though he acknowledged that retro styling can wear thin. The interior will follow VW's updated design language, including the return of physical buttons. Schäfer hinted that lithium iron phosphate batteries could help lower the price. No launch date was given, but the first SSP-based EVs are expected by the end of the decade.

US buyers face a longer wait. Volkswagen has delayed the ID. Buzz's return in the US until the 2028 model year, and Q3 US sales were just 432 units, down 82.5% from the same period in 2025. VW says it is not canceling the model for the US market.
