Volkswagen is preparing to recall several thousand electric vehicles after an internal quality check found high-voltage battery cells that do not meet quality requirements, according to Electrek. The affected models include the ID.3, ID.4, ID.7, and ID. Buzz, along with the Cupra Born, for vehicles produced between 2023 and 2026. A company spokesperson told German newspaper Handelsblatt that the recall covers several thousand EVs.

This latest action follows a US-specific recall earlier this month affecting 22,524 ID.4 SUVs for model years 2023 to 2026. Volkswagen says the root cause is still unknown, but charging the high-voltage battery above 80% in certain models could trigger thermal propagation, meaning a fire inside the battery. The company is urging owners to limit charging to 80% until a remedy is available.

Volkswagen has asked battery supplier SK Battery America for additional clarifications about specific production dates and a potential clean date. In the US, Volkswagen received 22 claims between January 18, 2024, and August 7, 2026. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on November 27, 2026, with separate letters to follow when a fix is ready. Volkswagen has also issued a recall in the UK; German authorities have not yet listed full details.
