Electric cargo bikes are often promoted as car replacements for school runs and errands, but their practicality depends on how easy they are to ride when loaded. A new review of the Xtracycle Swoop ASM highlights one feature that could remove a common barrier: Shimano's automatic electronic shifting. The system downshifts automatically when the bike stops, so riders don't have to remember to find a low gear before pulling away with several hundred pounds of bike, passengers, and cargo.
The review, published by Electrek, describes the Swoop ASM as a Class 3 e-bike with a 28 mph top speed, a 630Wh battery, and a claimed range of up to 60 miles. The reviewer praised the automatic shifting for feeling intuitive rather than fighting the rider, and noted that the torque-sensing motor and drivetrain work together cohesively. For a cargo bike, this means less mental effort when carrying kids or heavy loads.
Xtracycle also includes much of the family-hauling equipment in the base package, including a rear passenger carrier rated for two-plus riders and well-built panniers. The reviewer tested the bike with two children and more than 100 pounds of cargo, and found the geometry stable enough to ride briefly without hands on the handlebars—an unusual compliment for a long-tail design. With integrated lights, a dropper seat post, and a simple display, the Swoop ASM appears aimed at riders who want a dependable daily workhorse rather than a weekend toy.
