The Register reports that a new forecast projects 70% of enterprises will abandon vendor-built agentic AI by 2028. The headline figure points to a rapid reversal of today's enthusiasm for AI agents, with most deployments expected to be short-lived.

The core problem is the "build it, bill it, bin it" pattern. Vendors using forward-deployed engineering build and operate systems on the customer's behalf, which leaves those customers dependent on the vendor's staff for maintenance, changes, and troubleshooting. When that expertise is withdrawn or the engagement ends, the system becomes unsustainable and is binned.

That dependency on outside know-how is cited as the primary reason for the predicted wave of abandonments. The forecast implies that enterprises may need to rethink how they procure and operate agentic AI if they want it to last beyond the initial build phase.
