Alibaba Cloud has laid out a six-year plan to grow its datacenter footprint to 20 gigawatts, a target that implies a steady, long-term buildout rather than a sudden sprint. The company also unveiled a chip designed to power those facilities, positioning the silicon as a key part of its infrastructure strategy.

By contrast, the US alone has roughly 37GW of datacenter capacity under construction. That figure might suggest the market is approaching saturation, but Alibaba does not appear to share that concern. The company's roadmap assumes the AI boom still has room to run, and that demand for compute will keep climbing.

Taken together, the announcement places Alibaba Cloud firmly in the global AI infrastructure race, betting that hyperscale capacity will remain scarce. The contrast with the US pipeline underscores how much capital is flowing into AI compute, and how confident operators are that it will be put to use.
