AMD is pursuing a broader partnership with Samsung to secure a stable supply of advanced memory, according to Tom's Hardware. The chip designer is reportedly looking to deepen a relationship that currently centers on memory sourcing.
Samsung, however, reportedly wants to make the arrangement mutual. The memory giant hopes to turn AMD's memory purchases into foundry orders for logic chips, meaning AMD would also use Samsung's chip manufacturing services. That would tie memory supply to production services, a more complex deal than a simple supply contract.
The potential deal reflects how major chipmakers are increasingly trying to lock in both compute and memory capacity in the same partnership. For AMD, the benefit would be assured access to memory; for Samsung, it would be a chance to grow its foundry business. Whether the two sides can agree on terms remains to be seen.
