A survey by Opinium Research, reported by The Register, finds that British attitudes toward social media are overwhelmingly negative, yet behavior tells a different story. Only 7 percent of UK adults consider social media a force for good, and roughly a third believe life would improve if the platforms vanished tomorrow.

Respondents cited addiction (42 percent), misinformation, and algorithm-driven division. Half said social media is worse for society now than in 2010, and more than half blame commercialization. There is also strong support for regulation: seven in ten back fines for platforms that expose under-16s to harmful content.

Despite these views, usage has not declined. According to the poll, 49 percent use social media more than they did 16 years ago, and a third use it "a lot more." Statista figures cited by The Register put UK sign-ups at 55.5 million, up from 29.4 million in 2010. The Register's columnist notes his own abandonment of Facebook and X, but the aggregate data suggests most Brits are not following suit.
