The Chips Joint Undertaking (Chips JU) has launched two new calls for projects covering the full AI compute value chain. Together, the calls carry an indicative EU budget of €80 million, signalling a focused push to reduce European reliance on non-EU chip technology.
One call is directed at developing functional AI chip demonstrators, while the other supports the evaluation, procurement, and related activities. This split allows both early-stage hardware design and later-stage validation to receive funding under the same programme.
According to the announcement, the calls are complementary, meaning applicants can choose the track that fits their project stage. The initiative is part of a broader European effort to build sovereign capabilities in AI hardware and computing infrastructure.
