Excel 2016 paste fix arrives, but conditional formatting risk remains
Microsoft has issued a hotfix for a copy-paste regression in Excel 2016 caused by the September 2026 security update, but the repair is limited and may not resolve all formatting-related failures.
Both The Register and BleepingComputer report that Microsoft has released a fix for copy-and-paste failures in Excel 2016. The issue emerged after users installed the September 2026 security update KB5002914, which caused paste to stop working in some cases.
The fix is a hotfix addressed specifically to Excel 2016, and both outlets agree on that scope. Neither suggests a broader repair for other Office versions. BleepingComputer frames it as a straightforward resolution of the known issue.
The Register adds an important caveat: the hotfix may still fail in conditional formatting scenarios. BleepingComputer does not mention this limitation, so users who rely on conditional formatting may find the fix only partly restores normal paste behavior.
