Google has officially confirmed that ChromeOS will stop receiving updates in mid-2034, a date that had previously appeared in court records. The confirmation came in a support document aimed at Chrome IT administrators in enterprise and education settings.
Chromebooks are normally promised 10 years of support, so devices whose support windows extend past 2034 will see that promise cut short. Google says it is committed to helping customers transition to Googlebook OS, and that many newer Chromebooks will offer direct migration paths, but it has not yet listed which models qualify or described how upgrades will work.
Googlebook OS appears to be closer to Android than Chrome OS, though Google says it will continue supporting web apps and web developer APIs. Management capabilities for Googlebooks are expected in the second half of 2027, suggesting enterprise deployments may take a while. Existing Chrome Education and Enterprise upgrade licenses won't carry over, and Google hasn't announced new license terms.
Googlebooks are available for pre-order now and launch on October 4. The support document also notes that Googlebooks will use the same 10-year update and security patch system as Chromebooks, counting from the launch of the CPU inside the device.
