Huawei Accelerates Ascend NPU Roadmap, Boosts FP4 Performance
Huawei is pulling next-gen Ascend NPUs forward by several quarters, with early models showing far higher performance than expected.
Huawei has detailed its AI accelerator roadmap, moving next-generation Ascend NPUs ahead of schedule by several quarters. Both Tom's Hardware and The Register report that the company is accelerating deliveries of its 960-series chips, with the Ascend 960PR showing FP4 performance that doubles prior expectations, according to Tom's Hardware.
The Register highlights the Ascend 960DT as arriving early as well, positioning it as potentially the best AI accelerator available to China, with performance far exceeding what Western vendors could offer the region. While the two sources agree on the accelerated timeline and strong performance, they focus on different models: Tom's Hardware emphasizes the 960PR's FP4 gains, while The Register points to the 960DT's overall capability.
Both outlets also note Huawei's broader strategy of mimicking Nvidia's AI factory architecture, combining the NPUs with Kunpeng CPUs and new scale-up and scale-out connectivity solutions. The net effect is a faster ramp-up for domestic AI compute in China, even as export controls limit Western chip access.
