IEEE is continuing preparations for a major realignment of its geographic regions, according to IEEE Spectrum. The current Region 1 (Northeastern U.S.) will be folded into a new Region 2, which will also absorb the existing Region 2 (Eastern U.S.). The combined region will be called Region 2 (Northeastern and Eastern U.S.), and the Region 1 designation will be retired.

In Asia-Pacific, the current Region 10 will be divided into two regions. The new Region 10 will cover North Asia, while the new Region 11 will cover South Asia and the Pacific. The changes are set to take effect on 1 January 2028.

Work has already begun within IEEE Member and Geographic Activities and other organizational units, including system updates, elections, governance, communications, and finances. IEEE says the realignment will not affect membership, local sections, or chapters.
