At a railway station in Luxembourg City, a mostly redundant tap-in/tap-out terminal has been putting on a light show. The INIT PROXmobile unit, spotted at Rout Bréck / Pafendall station, cycles through flashing colors and test patterns. The country's public transport has been free since 2020, so most passengers have no reason to use the device.
The likely explanation is mundane: the terminal is stuck in a diagnostic boot loop. It runs through checks of the LCD screen—red, green, blue subpixels, a white screen, and a grid pattern for contrast and alignment—then fails to boot into its normal operation and starts again.
The Register's source speculated about AI takeovers or rave marketing, but the more probable reality is a self-test loop awaiting an engineer. Since the terminals are managed remotely, an alarm has presumably alerted an administrator. The device remains a small monument to hardware left behind by a policy change.
