A Reddit user who bought a used PC on OfferUp for $650 discovered it was a stolen rental when the machine was remotely disabled after a Windows update. The PC was an NZXT Flex One unit, part of a subscription rental program run by NZXT and its partner Fragile. The seller had no right to resell it, and Fragile confirmed the unit belonged to the rental fleet.
Fragile responded to the Redditor's post, asking for receipts, chat logs, and seller information. After verifying the claim, the company agreed to replace the bricked PC at no cost, with the condition that the original unit be handed over to police. The Redditor, who said they needed the computer for school, called it the best possible outcome and was waiting for shipping instructions to return the device.
The incident comes after NZXT's Flex program faced a RICO lawsuit in California, which ended in a $3.45 million settlement earlier this year. Some commenters described the replacement as a rare win for a user in this situation, and Fragile said it would pursue the seller, meaning the person who sold the rental PC is not off the hook.
