Windows 11's market share has crept past 70%, reaching 71.5%, while Windows 10 dropped to 27.77%, according to Statcounter estimates cited by The Register. The figures come from Statcounter's tracking code on more than a million sites; Microsoft does not publish official usage numbers.
The shift comes as the first year of Windows 10 Extended Security Updates draws to a close. Commercial customers paid $61 per device in year one; renewing for year two costs $122. Consumers have free options in some cases, but enterprises must pay or upgrade their hardware.
Lansweeper's Esben Dochy told The Register that most enterprises already moved off Windows 10 during the first ESU year, leaving a "stickier" remainder. He expects a "small bump" around the renewal date, but says the steep part of the upgrade curve is behind us; for many holdouts, paying ESU is simpler than replacing the machines they have.
