The American Diabetes Association announced that Rita Kalyani is no longer its chief scientific and medical officer, effective immediately. In a brief notice, CEO Charles Henderson thanked Kalyani for her dedication but offered no explanation for her departure.
The move comes just over six weeks after the ADA said its review of an incident at its New Orleans meeting in June would need more time. On June 5, five members were escorted out by armed security officers after handing out an April editorial from the ADA's own journal, Diabetes Care, that voiced alarm over cuts to federal research funding.
Kalyani's exit adds to the turmoil that has surrounded the organization since the expulsions. The promised report on the incident has not yet been completed, and the notice provided no further details about the review or her departure.
