Artelo’s oral cannabinoid agonist matches semaglutide in obese mice
A preclinical study in obese mice suggests Artelo Biosciences’ oral dual cannabinoid agonist could rival a leading GLP-1 drug on weight loss.
Artelo Biosciences presented findings showing that its oral dual cannabinoid agonist achieved weight loss similar to that of the GLP-1 drug semaglutide in obese mice. The compound, which originated from AstraZeneca’s pipeline, is being studied as a potential alternative to current GLP-1-based obesity treatments.
The results are based on a single research report from Fierce Biotech, and no independent sources were included. The study appears to be at an early, preclinical stage, and it does not yet demonstrate safety or efficacy in humans.
Still, the matchup is notable because semaglutide has become a standard reference for weight-loss drug research. An oral small-molecule cannabinoid agonist that could match that effect would represent a mechanistically distinct approach, though much more evidence is needed before any conclusions can be drawn about its therapeutic potential.
