The FDA has approved FAYUVI, the first gene therapy for Sanfilippo syndrome type A, a rare and ultimately fatal inherited condition that affects children. The approval follows years of research conducted at the Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital, specifically within its Jerry R. Mendell Center for Gene Therapy.

Sanfilippo syndrome type A is caused by a missing enzyme that leads to the buildup of harmful substances in the brain, causing progressive loss of cognitive and motor function. Until now, treatment options were limited to managing symptoms, and the disease typically shortens life expectancy.

FAYUVI is designed to deliver a functional copy of the faulty gene, addressing the underlying cause rather than just the symptoms. The approval marks a significant step for gene therapy in rare pediatric diseases, though long-term outcomes and broader accessibility will depend on continued follow-up and clinical experience.
