MultiCare and Samaritan Health Services will formally merge on Nov. 1, the two nonprofit systems announced Monday. The combination received final approval from Oregon regulators, including for Samaritan's health plans, clearing the way for the deal that was first proposed in late 2025.

Under the agreement, Tacoma-based MultiCare—which operates 13 hospitals—will affiliate with Samaritan's five-hospital network in Oregon. MultiCare will invest $700 million over ten years into Samaritan, which will continue to operate under its own name alongside MultiCare's branding. Samaritan's CEO, Marty Cahill, said the milestone brings the partnership's resources closer to the communities it serves.

The systems have said the merger will help Samaritan access tools and technology to meet growing healthcare needs and better weather potential cuts to health programs. For MultiCare, the deal extends its footprint into Oregon. The original target closing date had been Oct. 1, but the final regulatory approval came on Friday, pushing the effective date to November.
