The Trump administration is delaying by 90 days a federal rule that could prevent Americans from buying prescription drugs from licensed international pharmacies. The rule was originally scheduled to take effect on Oct. 22, but the delay follows growing criticism from patient advocacy groups and dozens of congressional lawmakers who warned it could drastically reduce the flow of medicines from Canada and other countries.
The administration says the rule is intended to crack down on illegal goods, particularly opioids, that enter the U.S. through low-value foreign shipments. It specifically targets the de minimis exemption, which previously allowed shipments valued under $800 to pass through customs more easily without tariffs or detailed tracking data.
Critics argue the rule would have unintended consequences, cutting off a legitimate channel for affordable prescription drugs. The delay gives opponents more time to press for changes before the rule can take effect.
