Online medical scheduling company Zocdoc has completed its first acquisition since being founded in 2007, buying Sohar Health, a startup focused on automated insurance eligibility verification. The deal closed on Oct. 2 and expands an existing integration that has been in place since last year. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Sohar, founded in 2023 by a physician and an engineer, raised $3.8 million in seed funding last year. Its platform lets patients enter basic details on Zocdoc and receive real-time verification of insurance coverage and whether a provider is in-network. The company says 90% of verifications are completed within 30 seconds.

The acquisition is part of Zocdoc's push to scale its tech infrastructure. Last month, it launched Care Access Network, an enterprise platform embedding its search and scheduling into third-party apps and AI tools, with partners including Amazon Health AI, Google Gemini, Yelp, and Blue Shield of California. Zocdoc CEO Dr. Oliver Kharraz said the company is investing in making care discovery and booking more seamless at scale.

Zocdoc reached unicorn status in 2015, then struggled with its flat-rate subscription model before switching to a per-patient fee in 2018. It returned to sustained profitability five years later and was valued at $2.3 billion in May. Zocdoc said there are no plans to reduce teams or eliminate roles as a result of the Sohar deal.
