Structuring radiology reports with large language models typically requires either proprietary cloud services or large open models that demand high-end GPUs. A new arXiv paper, MedPAO-Assist, identifies this as a critical bottleneck for adoption and proposes an alternative that can run at the edge.
The paper introduces an agentic AI system that is both edge-deployable and modality-aware. By moving away from cloud dependence and high-end hardware, the approach aims to make report structuring more practical in resource-constrained clinical settings. The modality-aware design suggests the system adapts its processing based on the imaging modality, such as X-ray, CT, or MRI.
Because this is a single preprint, the results and performance details are not yet independently verified. Still, the work points toward a direction where AI-assisted radiology workflows could become more accessible without sacrificing the benefits of LLM-based structuring.
