Hamilton-Jacobi (HJ) reachability analysis is a formal framework for verifying that control systems stay within safe states. However, as a new arXiv paper notes, training neural networks to act as accurate HJ safety certificates remains challenging, especially when the unsafe regions are difficult to characterize precisely.
The authors propose an enumeration-guided training strategy. Rather than relying solely on generic sampling or adversarial search, the method enumerates candidate unsafe states or scenarios to guide the training process. This is intended to focus learning on the most problematic regions and improve the certificate's accuracy where standard training tends to fail.
The paper is available on arXiv under identifier 2610.27870. It does not claim to solve all scalability issues, but it offers a concrete direction for making neural certificates more reliable in safety-critical control applications.
