Delirium is a common and serious complication for ICU patients, associated with longer hospital stays, lasting cognitive problems, and increased mortality. Early identification could help clinicians intervene sooner, but predicting delirium is challenging because it depends on both physiological trends and clinical notes.
The new preprint introduces DeliMF, a model that uses a gated cross-attention mechanism to fuse structured time-series data (such as vital signs and lab values) with unstructured clinical text. The goal is to flag patients who will become delirious within the first day of ICU admission.
Because the paper is a single arXiv preprint, there are no independent comparisons to discuss here. The authors position the fusion approach as a way to capture complementary signals from both data types, which may improve early warning compared to using either modality alone.
