Medical practice rarely hinges on a single test or image. Real workflows string together several analyses—imaging, lab results, clinical notes—that inform one another. According to a new preprint, existing specialist and generalist AI models are not designed to coordinate these interdependent steps, leaving a gap between what models do and what clinical work actually requires.
The authors introduce MMedAgent-Plus, a multimodal medical tool-use agent built to take on that coordination role. The abstract positions the agent as a way to bring multiple analytical tools together within a single workflow, rather than expecting one model to do everything or relying on humans to stitch outputs together.
As with many arXiv announcements, the abstract is brief and does not include benchmark numbers or architectural specifics. The contribution at this stage is the framing: a tool-use agent that treats medical workflows as sequences of interdependent analyses, not isolated tasks.
