Search-augmented language models are increasingly deployed as long-horizon research agents, but most open training methods assume the user's goal stays fixed for the entire search. That assumption limits adaptability in real-world tasks where requirements evolve mid-process.
The arXiv preprint introduces SteerSearch, which explicitly studies mid-response steering. In this setting, users can redirect the model while it is generating, rather than only at the start or between turns. This makes the interaction more dynamic and closer to how humans actually refine research questions.
The significance lies in moving beyond static goal-setting for agentic search. By focusing on mid-response steering, the work points toward training and evaluation methods that accommodate changing user intent. As a preprint, the abstract does not yet detail implementation or results, but the problem framing is a useful step for the research community.
