A decades-long mystery beneath the North Sea has finally been solved. Researchers have confirmed that the Silverpit Crater, buried 700 meters below the seabed, was created when a 160-meter-wide asteroid slammed into Earth approximately 43 to 46 million years ago.

The violent collision would have unleashed a massive tsunami, with waves reaching about 330 feet in height. The finding settles the origin of the crater, which had puzzled scientists for years, and adds a dramatic chapter to the region's geological history.
