A critical vulnerability in the open-source Ghostscript interpreter and rendering engine could let attackers take over servers by uploading a malicious PDF. The flaw, tracked as CVE-2026-39919, is a heap buffer overflow that can be triggered when Ghostscript processes specially crafted PDF files.
According to BleepingComputer, the issue is rated critical because it enables remote code execution. Any service that accepts PDF uploads and relies on Ghostscript to render or convert them is potentially exposed. Attackers could exploit the overflow to run arbitrary commands on the underlying server.
Administrators should watch for updates from Ghostscript maintainers and consider limiting PDF upload functionality or processing untrusted files in isolated environments until a fix is available.
