LG Electronics USA has announced it will suspend any smart TV apps that turn the device into an always-on residential proxy node. The decision comes less than a month after security researchers reported that a significant share of games on LG's platform engage in this practice.
According to the research, more than 42 percent of games examined were found to be using the TV's internet connection to relay traffic for third parties. This effectively makes the home network part of a proxy service, often without the user's explicit awareness.
LG's move is a direct response to these findings. By suspending such apps, the company aims to curb the misuse of its smart TV ecosystem. The announcement highlights growing concerns about how consumer devices can be co-opted into larger network infrastructures.
