University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) said it is investigating a ransomware attack that affected its College of Medicine, after hackers stole information from the college's servers. The university said affected systems were temporarily unavailable but have been restored, and that the main network and patient care at UI Health were not impacted.
The university reported the incident to law enforcement and is coordinating with agencies during recovery. It plans to notify anyone whose information was stolen. UIC is the largest university in Chicago, with more than 35,000 students; the College of Medicine has about 1,300 students.
The attack was claimed by a ransomware group called Booba, which said it stole 344 GB of data. SentinelOne's Brett Williams said Booba appears to be a rebrand of the Frag ransomware based on its leak site style and negotiation flow. The group emerged in late July and has claimed 49 attacks, including against Merrimack County, New Hampshire.
